The skull splitter , subtitled Hanover's city illustrated , has been a monthly Hanover city magazine since 1976. In addition to the event calendar and advertisements, the magazine- format sheet also contains an editorial section with reports, interviews and portraits, primarily on the event culture of the Lower Saxony state capital, as well as articles on current cultural and socio-political topics.

history

The second oldest city magazine in the Lower Saxony state capital was founded by Reinhard Mahl and Thomas Steinhausen, at the same time as publishers, in 1976. The distinctive name, sometimes also with the short form "Spalter", is said to have "occurred to the two graphic and art students at the time after enjoying plenty of fruit wine." The first edition of their skull splitter, which was initially published by EVG Schmidt, Hampe u. Co. came out, appeared in October 1976 as a November issue in A5 format with a print run of 10,000 and was distributed - initially free of charge - mainly to the catering scene.

Only later did mobile vendors stand on the streets or wander through the bars and cafes to sell. Today's modern format in color also only caught on later. For many singles, the contact ads printed in the early issues at the end of the magazine - and often briefly commented on by the editorial team - were interesting under the heading “Fish is looking for a bicycle”.

From 1979, the editor-in-chief was Goetz Buchholz , who made the magazine journalistically professional and economically profitable in the 1980s. Among the sheet makers also counted Giovanni di Lorenzo , who began his journalism career at, among other Skullsplitter. Hollow Skai , who founded the punk label No Fun Records in Hanover under his real name Holger Poscich in 1979 , was a music journalist and from 1986 to 1989 editor-in-chief of the skull splitter.

In 1984 the circulation reached around 25,000 pieces, after the magazine against z. T. could enforce free competition papers. To mark its 20th anniversary in 1996, a 120-page special was also published.

After the cover story of the September 1985 issue about the business of the porn industry and the " Teresa O ", the journalists received the largest flood of letters to the editor in the history of the city's illustrated books. The story also made national headlines, as a result of which the “Foxy Lady” suddenly became a much sought-after conversationalist on many television talk shows.
