The Schäl Sick Brass Band was a band from Cologne committed to world music . Its name is derived from the Schäl Sick , the districts of the city on the right bank of the Rhine.

Career

In 1995 Raimund Kroboth founded the ensemble with other jazz musicians from the Cologne scene. Sounds from Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece or North Africa flow together and are rearranged and reinterpreted. For example, the Egyptian song "Mustapha", known in the Islamic world, was sung in Kölsch. Bavarian brass music was also provided with Persian texts. While the sound of the band was mainly influenced by the Iranian singer Maryam Akhondy until 1999 , it was Ivanka Ivanova from Bulgaria who set the vocal accents for several years. Pieces are also played that are bound to an imaginary folklore , but are interpreted less with the means of jazz and more with those of folk punk.

In the first few years, the band not only performed in Europe, but also toured through non-European countries such as Morocco and Turkey; later she also visited Lebanon , Syria , Jordan , Palestine , Israel , Egypt and Taiwan . The band also played to celebrate Willy Millowitsch's 90th birthday .

Awards

The group has released five CDs; the first two sound carriers recorded with Maryam Akhondy - "Majnoun" and "Tschupun" - were each awarded the German Record Critics' Prize.
