The Schöhsee is a lake in Holstein Switzerland in Schleswig-Holstein and is located in the urban area of the district town of Plön .

description

The steep, mesotrophic - eutrophic water has a water surface of 0.78 km², a maximum depth of 29.3 meters , an average depth of 10.9 meters and a lake volume of 8.5 million m³. The inflowless lake with a 2.3 km² catchment area has a 400 meter long drain at its eastern end into the Behler See .

The lake, located in a hilly landscape, is bordered by extensively managed grassland areas in the north and east, a mixed forest in the south-east, an allotment garden and a cemetery on the south bank, as well as private gardens, a fishing club on the west bank and a path that runs for about 800 meters directly on the lake. To the west of the cemetery is a large, unguarded bathing area and another bathing area can be found in the forest.

He also has three small, wooded islands (from west to east: Kleiner Warder, Mittelster Warder, Großer Warder).

The sea water level fluctuates between a maximum of 22.45 meters above sea level in spring and a minimum of 22.27 meters above sea level in late summer (data from 2001).

In the winter months, the Schöhsee is of regional importance for some water bird species , especially for up to 2000 tufted ducks at times . The lake is also part of the hunting ground for white-tailed eagles and breeding grounds for oyster fishermen , great crested grebes , kingfishers , golden-eyed ducks and many other water bird species.

Due to the low nutrient content , especially nitrogen and phosphorus , resulting from the relatively small catchment area of the water , and the limited algae growth , the Schöhsee is one of the clearest lakes in Schleswig-Holstein with a summer visibility of over 3.5 meters.

Driving on the lake with motor boats and sailing boats is strictly forbidden, while canoes, rowing boats and paddle boats can be used with a permit obtained from the fishing club.

The Max Planck Institute for Limnology, which existed under this name until 2007 (since April 2007 Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology ), which is located on the banks of the Schöhsee, investigated the inland water ecosystem , among other things .

Since the lake, which is currently in a good ecological condition, especially in the area of underwater fauna and vegetation , and is only slightly regenerative due to the relatively long exchange time, it requires strict protection to maintain this condition. A possible threat would take place with an intensification of agriculture and the use of fertilizers in the fields or in the gardens.
