The Schöne Mann , Wängkopf or Wendkopf is a 1532 m high mountain on the border between the municipalities of Dornbirn and Hohenems in Austria. An unmarked path leads up from the south-east. From the summit, which is marked by a summit cross, there is a view of Lake Constance and numerous mountains in Austria and Switzerland.

Since 1961 the height has been given on the official maps as 1532 m, on older maps as 1539 m.

The Schönermannalpe, named after the mountain, is located on the southern slope, in the municipality of Dornbirn .

Surname

The naming of the mountain is extraordinarily inconsistent. On the Franziszeischer cadastre (original map) the summit is not shown at all, and the name “Schöner Mann” refers to a point at the western end of the ridge with a prominent rock formation. This remains the same on the land survey of 1871/72, while the revised land survey of 1887 still shows this point at 1,478  m above sea level. A. specifies. Only on the special map 1908–1915 is the summit itself also drawn, but only with an altitude of 1539 m and without a name. It remains that way until the provisional ÖK50 of 1946/47. On the later editions of the ÖK50 (from 1961) the summit itself is referred to as a “beautiful man” with a height of 1532 m. The current edition describes the summit as “Wendkopf” and positions the name “Schöner Mann” roughly in the same place as on the maps before 1961, but without marking a specific point. The hiking map issued by the city of Dornbirn describes the summit as “Wängkopf” and positions the “Schönen Mann” on a secondary summit at 1522  m above sea level. A. Other hiking maps and the Alpine Club Guide expressly describe the summit as a “beautiful man”.

In any case, “beautiful man” is a name that was always related to the mountain and was used alternately for the mountain itself, for the rock formation at the western end and for a secondary peak. The main summit is also alternately referred to as “Schöner Mann”, “Wendkopf” or “Wängkopf”, although official maps before 1961 show no name for the summit at all, although it is the highest point in the Schuttannenberg Mountains .

Mining

On the basis of old documents, it is concluded that there was a silver and lead mine in the area of the “Schöner Mann” alp. This was first mentioned in a document in the Chur deed of 909. When Archduke Siegmund converted the Ems pledge into a hereditary imperial fief in 1430 , this silver and lead mine was one of the fiefdoms.
