Schöninghsdorf-Hoogeveen Canal

The Schöninghsdorf-Hoogeveen Canal (abbreviation: SHK ) is a canal in western Lower Saxony on the border with the Netherlands in the Emsland district . The canal is part of the Left Ems canal network , which was built between 1870 and 1904. It connects the south-north canal near Schöninghsdorf, a district of the municipality of Twist , with the Dutch canal network. In the Netherlands the canal is called Hoogeveense Vaart . It runs from Schöninghsdorf via Klazinaveen, Erica, Nieuw-Amsterdam , Zwinderen, Geesbrug, Noordsche Schut, Hoogeveen , Echten, De Wijk and joins the Meppelerdiep at Meppel . Originally, the canal was suitable for ships with a load capacity of 200 tons. Today it is only used for drainage .
