geography
location
The Schüffel rises in the Siegerland Rothaar foothills and in the south of the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park . Its summit is about 1.7 kilometers (km) south-southeast of Afholderbach , 1.4 km northeast of Eschenbach and 1.7 km (as the crow flies ) northeast of Brauersdorf ; they are all districts of Netphen . Most of the mountain belongs to the Eschenbach district . Its northeast flank is in the district of Afholderbach, the southwest flank in that of Brauersdorf and its southeast flank in the district of Obernau, a former village (now flooded by the Obernautalsperre ). To the north and northwest, the Schüffels landscape drops into the Netphe valley and to the south to the Obernautalsperre.
The Schüffel summit is overgrown with high grass, which is pierced in some places by slate cliffs.
Natural allocation
The Schüffel belongs in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) and in the main unit Siegerland (331) to the subunit Siegerländer Rothaar-Vorhöhen ( Siegquellbergland ; 331.2).
Flowing waters
The Zeppenbach rises in the transition area between the Schüffel and the Alte Burg . The Eschenbach rises on the western slope of the Schüffel and flows into the Netphe in the village of the same name.
Traffic and walking
About 1.1 km northwest of the summit, the federal highway 62 runs past the Schüffel in the Netphe valley through the villages of Afholderbach and Eschenbach . Starting from the mentioned localities, the mountain can be hiked on mostly forest trails and paths. The Netphener Keltenweg leads over the Schüffel , on which information boards explain the former life of the Celts every few kilometers; the Celtic masscots on these boards were drawn by the Siegerland author and cartoonist Matthias Kringe . In 2007 the originally forested Schüffel was almost completely deforested by Hurricane Kyrill. Since then, there has been a fantastic view of the distance from its summit.
