Life

Broadcast Hallo OB Van on July 29, 1982

During her studies in German, English and pedagogy at the University of Cologne , she worked from 1968, first as a presenter , then as a freelance reporter, and later as a permanent editor and program group leader for Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in Cologne. There she gained her first experience in moderation in 1968 at the age of 21 in the WDR morning magazine , in which she worked until 1974. From 1969 to 1971 she was a television reporter for the news program Here and Today . In 1972 she became the first woman to host the TV daily magazine and was the first German reporter to receive an annual contract with the BBC for the Midweek program . With the " current sports studio " on ZDF, she became the first sports presenter on German television. After her time at the gym, she moderated at 3 to 9 and then switched back to radio. Between 1974 and 1994, as editor-in-chief and presenter, she presented Hallo OB-Wagen, the first interactive broadcast on radio, in which for 20 years she interviewed people live with experts and the audience on everyday and taboo topics suggested by the audience. From 1976 she developed one of the first self-help groups in Germany.

In 1989, the WDR expanded its organization chart to include the forum for interactive programs , of which Carmen Thomas was head for almost 10 years. From 1990 until her departure in 2006 she was WDR program group leader. In 1995 Carmen Thomas was the first woman to be awarded the Order of the ears of the Cologne Civil Society from 1863. The Ear Order, designed and donated by the German sculptor Kurt Arentz, has been awarded annually since 1991 to people who “have their ear on the pulse of the times” and who make or have made special social and social contributions in different ways. The business magazine Forbes ranked her among the 100 most influential women in Germany in 1990.

Carmen Thomas taught at universities for 13 years and has been coaching people in business, politics and the media since 1980. Since 2001 she has been the managing director of the 1st Moderation Academy for Media + Economy Carmen Thomas in Ehreshoven, founded in 1998 .

On February 3, 1973 , she was the first woman to host a sports program on German television: The current sports studio on ZDF . Before its second broadcast, Bild am Sonntag had already written a review of this broadcast. To make this public, Thomas read out this coldly written criticism of the live broadcast himself: “You don't need to watch today because a large German newspaper already knows how I'll be today.” - The issue of Bild am Sunday with a comment on their show could be bought at the kiosk before the show started.

Half a year later, on July 21, 1973, their slip of the tongue " FC Schalke 05 against - now I've forgotten - Standard Liège " aroused nationwide reactions . The Bild newspaper only ran the story 18 days later on page 1, claiming that she had been dismissed.

Although one can often read that the “Schalke 05” promises had ended her career at the sports studio, she continued to moderate the sports studio for another 1½ years. But she announced - like many colleagues at that time - a permanent position at the WDR, because she had been employed too often as a freelancer , and thereupon gave up the current sports studio .

On May 21, 2006, Thomas explained in the ZDF show Nachtstudio -sequence When the ball was still round - memories of a popular sport , that the image campaign against them was actually aimed at the then ZDF sports director Hanns Joachim Friedrichs , who was the political editor , on top of that, close to the SPD, against internal resistance, the new head of the sports department had become. He has set himself the goal of presenting "sport and football with more quality and level" in the media with the support of others than pure sports moderators. Thereupon the internal resistance was carried outwards with the help of the Bild newspaper. She was only a representative target.
