It is an evergreen shrub with yellow, curved and furrowed branches that can reach heights of 1.5 meters. The leaves are narrow, obovate, gray-blue on the underside, up to 3.5 centimeters long, with 2 to 4 teeth on each side and nerve-like. The yellow flowers appear in May and are 10 to 16 in loose panicles up to 5 centimeters long. The fruits are egg-shaped and red-orange to carmine-red in color.

Like many other barberries, this type of plant and its varieties are often used as ornamental shrubs. Different varieties are known:

  • 'Barbarossa' with bright red fruits
  • 'Buccaner' with leaves that are green in winter; numerous spherical, shiny red fruits
  • 'Pirate King' with tall growth and bright scarlet red fruits
  • 'Wisley' broad and tall growth, large, spherical fruits, pink to orange-red.
