description
Wilson's barberry is a small, dense, partially deciduous (semi- evergreen ) shrub . The annual twigs are somewhat downy. The small foliage leaves are inverted lanceolate, the tip mostly rounded, reticulate, dark green on top, bluish-green underneath. The autumn color of the leaves is intense red. The leaf spines are three-part, up to 2 centimeters long and very thin. The golden yellow flowers are two to six, in tufted umbels, or in panicles up to 1.5 centimeters long. The round berries are salmon to coral red and last through winter.
Multiplication
This species can only be propagated by seeds or cuttings collected in nature .
use
Like many other barberries, Wilson's barberry and its cultivated forms are used as an ornamental shrub.
Cultivated forms
- Berberis wilsoniae var. Stapfiana (CK Schneid.) CK Schneid. : annual twigs glabrous, leaves prickly
- Berberis wilsoniae var. Subcaulialata (CK Schneid.) CK Schneid. ( Syn .: Berberis coryi H.J. Veitch ): The annual twigs are bare and the leaves are whitish underneath.
The species forms hybrids with other species of the genus :
With the cluster-fruited barberry ( Berberis aggregata ), Wilson's barberry forms the hybrid Berberis × rubrostilla Chitt. ; According to the Zander short dictionary of plant names, the name Berberis × carminea Ahrendt is also used for this hybrid .
