Scheidemannplatz (formerly Neuer Wilhelmsplatz ) is the name of a square in the north Hessian city of Kassel .

Scheidemannplatz is an important part of the connection from Kassel's main train station to the lower city center with the Königsstraße shopping street . The ten-storey EAM high-rise (the former administration building of EAM) marks the beginning of stairs street and thus the way to Königsstraße and Friedrichsplatz .

The square is used for car traffic as part of the Kassel inner city ring. The stop of the same name is served by several bus, tram and RegioTram lines. Since a renovation completed in 2005, there have been larger contiguous areas for pedestrian traffic with a pleasant stay.

history

Today's Scheidemannplatz goes back to an expansion of the city in 1833. The planned Friedrich-Wilhelm-Stadt, which got its name from the Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Hessen-Kassel , should be with the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Straße (today Ständeplatz ) and the " Neue Wilhelmsplatz ”(later“ Friedrich-Wilhelms-Platz ”, today Scheidemannplatz) received its center. The original plans envisaged the Ständehaus built in 1834-36 in the center of the new Wilhelmplatz . In the middle of the square was the four-liquid fountain from 1881 to 1952 . With three radial streets crossing the square , a facility of the same importance as that of the Königsplatz would have been created.

The historic buildings were badly damaged by the bombing raids on Kassel on the night of October 22nd to 23rd, 1943.

The square got its current shape during the period of reconstruction under the influence of modernism from 1950 to 1954. In 1955 the two most important buildings on Scheidemannplatz were completed. This was the seat of the EAM and the Kassel Chamber of Crafts. The last remaining building, which dates before this redesign, is the former Grandhotel Schirmer , which is now used as an office building by the State Welfare Association of Hesse .

The square served on the one hand as a connection between the main train station and the city center and on the other as a traffic junction for road traffic and trams. A generous underground passage had been created for pedestrians , in which there were also shops, and an exit led directly to stairs street . The underpass was one of many along the inner city ring and, next to the Hauptbahnhof (Kassel) underground station, the only one with a large number of shops.

In the summer of 2003, a competition to redesign the square was held. The agency mann landscape architects prevailed among the 7 participants . In the course of this construction project, the underground structure was filled with concrete. The square was inaugurated on September 23, 2005.

The square got its current name after the Lord Mayor of Kassel (1919–1925) Philipp Scheidemann , previously the first Reich Minister- President of the first German republic.

traffic

RegioTram ramp

The two state roads L3237 and L3420 cross at Scheidemannplatz . The streets leading to the square (Rudolf-Schwander-Straße and Ständeplatz) are part of the so-called inner city ring. This serves to develop the city center for car traffic.

The Scheidemannplatz stop of Kassel local transport is served by the tram or RegioTram lines 5E, 7, N5, RT3, RT4 and RT5 as well as several bus lines. It is used as an alternative route for major events on Königsstraße. Since the summer of 2007, the new RegioTram has been running through the tunnel built under the main train station into the Kassel tram network at Scheidemannplatz . The ramp was previously the entrance to the (now disused) underground station at the main station .

Surrounding development

EAM high-rise on Scheidemannplatz

The most important spatial element is the EAM high-rise on the eastern edge of the square, which also marks the beginning of the staircase street. It used to be the seat of the energy company Energie-Aktiengesellschaft Mitteldeutschland . On the southern edge of the square is the building of the Kassel Chamber of Crafts , on the opposite side the main office of the Volksbank Kassel Göttingen .

layout

Checkerboard paving

The redesign of the square, which was completed in 2005, is a quote from the 1950s. This is primarily expressed in the design of the floor covering. This was equipped in the form of a checkerboard pattern with black and white fields, which extends over the entire square including the traffic islands. Only the streets and the tram stops are excluded from this.

The trees that already existed on the square were, in part grouped together, enclosed in larger troughs , the interior of which was planted with grass. The edge serves both as a border and as a seat .

When it is dark, the troughs are staged by LED lights in the frames at foot height. There are also several light steles distributed across the square , which provide extensive lighting.

The redesign was planned by landscape architect Tobias Mann from Fulda.
