History of Volksbank Kassel Göttingen eG

Volksbank Kassel Göttingen eG was created through the merger of Kasseler Bank eG with Volksbank Göttingen eG in 2017. The entry in the cooperative register took place on October 12, 2017; the company merged retrospectively as of January 1, 2017.

History of the former Kasseler Bank eG

The history of the former Kasseler Bank eG begins on January 25, 1864 with the establishment of the Creditverein zu Cassel as an early forerunner of the later Volksbank Kassel eG. Under the chairmanship of the then businessman Louis Credé, 72 manufacturers and craftsmen came together to counteract the poor economic situation according to the self-help principle. Other well-known Kassel citizens such as the locomotive manufacturer Oscar Henschel, the merchant Louis Rosenzweig and the bookseller Georg Heinrich Wiegand were also among the founding members. The association started its business with 20,000 thalers of working capital. The development shows how quickly the principle of “helping people to help themselves” prevailed: just six months after the company was founded, the working capital increased by 150%. After 25 years, the 72 members had become 2,250 bank shareholders. In May 1923 the Creditverein zu Cassel was renamed to Kreditbank Cassel. Four years later, the outdated "C" in Kassel was replaced by a "K". In 1931 the Kassel credit bank merged with the commercial bank as the taking over cooperative. After the name was changed to “Volksbank Kassel” in March 1943, the Kasseler Beamtenbank became part of the Volksbank Kassel. In 1970 Volksbank Kassel eG merged with Waren-Kredit-Genossenschaft eG and Volksbank Bad Wildungen eG, in 1977 with Volksbank Wolfhagen eG, and in 1991 with Spar- und Kreditbank Bettenhausen and Volksbank Hofgeismar eG. In 1996, the merger with Raiffeisenbank Kurhessen resulted in Volks- und Raiffeisenbank Kassel eG, which was renamed Kasseler Bank eG one year later. The last merger of Kasseler Bank eG took place in August 2001 with Raiffeisenbank Hofgeismar eG.

History of the former Volksbank Göttingen eG

At the end of the 19th century, craftsmen and merchants met in Göttingen to discuss the establishment of their own cooperative bank. On November 14, 1896, six craftsmen formed the supervisory board and 14 members signed the founding protocol. Volksbank Göttingen started its business the following year. At the beginning it was called Göttinger Spar- und Kreditkasse eGmbH and started with only 103 members. The first financial year ended with a turnover of 413,317 marks. In 1922 the bank celebrated its 25th anniversary. This celebration was overshadowed by the chaotic financial conditions of the inflationary period. In November 1923 the Rentenmark was introduced. Then things went uphill again with the bank. In the spring of 1943, the General Assembly decided to change its name to “Volksbank Göttingen eGmbH”.
The currency reform on June 20, 1948 was a forward-looking event for all banks in Germany. After the conversion to the DM, the Volksbank Göttingen quickly succeeded in satisfying the strong demand from business people looking for credit on site. The business volume of the regional cooperative bank grew to around EUR 739 million (as of December 31, 2016).
Through the merger with neighboring cooperative banks, the business area also expanded considerably. In 1964 the Volksbank Göttingen eG merged as the acquiring cooperative with the savings and loan fund Herberhausen-Roringen, in 1980 with the Volksbank Nörten-Hardenberg and in 1991 with the Raiffeisenbank Hedemünden.
