History of the Volksbank Göttingen

The historical roots of the regional bank go back to the 1890s. Volksbank Göttingen eG was created through the merger of a total of four southern Lower Saxony cooperative banks, namely through mergers as the acquiring cooperative with the savings and loan bank Herberhausen-Roringen (1964), Volksbank eG based in Nörten-Hardenberg (1980) and Raiffeisenbank Hedemünden eG (1991).

On January 1, 2017, Volksbank Göttingen eG merged with Kasseler Bank eG to form Volksbank Kassel Göttingen eG.

Historical development of the Volksbank Göttingen

At the end of the 19th century, craftsmen and merchants met in Göttingen to discuss the establishment of their own cooperative bank. They met regularly in the second half of 1896 in the Krisches Kelle restaurant on the corner of Theaterstrasse (formerly Kuperstrasse) and Weender Strasse. The restaurant was opposite the current Hugendubel bookstore - today at the corner of Theaterstrasse and Weender Strasse. On November 14, 1896, six craftsmen formed the supervisory board and 14 members signed the founding protocol. Volksbank Göttingen then started its business operations in 1897. At the beginning it was called Göttinger Spar- und Kreditkasse eGmbH and started with only 103 members. The first financial year ended with a turnover of 413,317 marks. In 1922 the bank celebrated its 25th anniversary. This celebration was overshadowed by the chaotic financial conditions of the inflationary period. In November 1923 the Rentenmark was introduced. Then things went uphill again with the bank. In the spring of 1943, following a request from the cooperative association , the general assembly decided to change its name to “Volksbank Göttingen eGmbH”. Göttingen was lucky that the city was surrendered without a fight on April 8, 1945, hardly disrupting economic life. However, due to the consequences of the Second World War , the Volksbank Göttingen did not celebrate its 50th anniversary . The currency reform on June 20, 1948 was a forward-looking event for all banks in Germany . After the changeover to the DM , the Volksbank Göttingen also quickly succeeded in satisfying the strong demand from business people looking for credit on site. The business volume of the regional cooperative bank has grown to 893 million euros to date (as of December 31, 2014). Through the merger with neighboring cooperative banks, the business area also expanded considerably. In 1964 the Volksbank Göttingen eG merged as the acquiring cooperative with the savings and loan fund Herberhausen-Roringen, in 1980 with the Volksbank Nörten-Hardenberg and in 1991 with the Raiffeisenbank Hedemünden. The current headquarters of the Volksbank Göttingen, which characterizes the Göttingen cityscape, was put into operation on May 22, 1972 at the Geismartor after a construction period of 22 months. The interior of the 7-storey building was completely modernized in 1994/1995 and received a new blue glass facade in 2001. In 2014 Volksbank Göttingen operated 16 branches, 3 self-service branches and a bank bus that served 14 towns.

Volksbank Göttingen eG merged with Kasseler Bank eG on January 1, 2017 to form Volksbank Kassel Göttingen eG. The entry in the cooperative register took place on October 12, 2017.

Historical development of the Raiffeisenbank Hedemünden

On December 11, 1892, 39 citizens of Hedemünden founded the savings and loan association eGmuH in Hedemünden. On December 16, 1892, the credit cooperative was entered in the cooperative register of the Royal District Court of Hann. Münden has been registered. On January 1, 1893, the cash register began operations. The number of members had risen to 67 by the end of the first financial year. Initially, the savings and loan bank in Hedemünden only operated money and credit transactions, so the General Assembly approved in its meeting on December 23, 1935 the start of goods business and the common use of machines. Two years after the end of World War II, on September 28, 1947, the General Assembly decided to transform the credit union into a registered cooperative with limited liability. On June 21, 1948, after the currency reform, it started with the opening balance sheet total of DM 213,792. In its extraordinary meeting on December 20, 1966, the General Assembly approved the merger with the savings and loan association Mollenfelde eGmbH, as the transferring cooperative, on the basis of the Merger agreement of November 29, 1966. The savings and loan fund Mollenfelde eGmbH was founded on January 24, 1920 and entered in the cooperative register of the Reinhausen District Court on February 16, 1920. The cooperative operated money and credit transactions as well as trade in goods. After this merger, the credit cooperative traded under the name Spar- und Autovermietung Hedemünden-Mollenfelde eGmbH. It merged again three years later: on June 21, 1969, the general assembly approved the merger with the savings and loan association Lippoldshausen eGmbH, as the transferring cooperative, on the basis of the merger agreement of May 14, 1969. The savings and loan fund Lippoldshausen eGmbH was founded in 1934 and on September 10, 1934 in the cooperative register of the district court of Hann. Münden has been registered. In September 1934, 18 comrades were entered in the membership register. On April 25, 1973, the general assembly of the savings and loan fund Hedemünden-Mollenfelde eGmbH decided to change its name to Raiffeisenbank Hedemünden eGmbH. On November 3, 1978, the general assembly approved the merger, based on the merger agreement of September 11, 1978, with the savings and loan association Wiershausen eG, as the transferring cooperative. While the total assets of Raiffeisenbank Hedemünden in 1976 were around DM 17 million, by 1991 they rose to around DM 95 million. At its general meeting on August 30, 1991, it approved the merger with Volksbank eG Göttingen, as the acquiring cooperative, on the basis of the merger agreement of April 23, 1991. The cooperative register volumes of the Hann. Münden are located in the Göttingen District Court (as of 2010). The register volumes of the former district courts in Northeim and Moringen have not been preserved. The whereabouts of the cooperative register volumes of the Göttingen District Court and the Reinhausen District Court could not be conclusively clarified by the Göttingen District Court in the course of this research.
