course

Course of the Schelpe through the provost office tom Roden around 1250. Map with Höxter, Nienkerken , settlement and monastery Corvey
Today's course of the Schelpe in the area of the Corveys monastery complex and its confluence with the Weser

The Schelpe rises southeast of Hohehaus in Westphalia and flows through Brenkhausen and the town of Höxter . About 1.2 km northwest of Corvey Castle it changes from an east to a south flow direction. This southern section is the Schelpe Canal , which was built around 1482 . The Schelpe Canal flows under Corveyer Allee and then runs parallel to the avenue - in the former creek bed of the pit . The Schelpe then flows through the monastery grounds and under the monastery building before flowing into the Weser just behind the monastery .

The current course of the Schelpe is the result of a centuries-long dispute between the city and the monastery over the water rights to the pit and the Schelpe. Originally the pit flowed through the Corvey monastery grounds. However, once the water had flowed through the city, it was no longer usable for the monastery. Therefore, the Schelpe, which previously flowed north of Corvey into the Weser, was diverted. The course of the pit was shortened, it was already routed to the old town of Höxter in the Weser. The current situation of the brooks was essentially regulated by a contract between the city and the monastery from 1482.

The Schelpe flowed as Scilipa in its earlier course through the complex of the former provost office tom Roden .

Another Quellarm the Schelpe is located approximately 300 meters southeast from the main source at 51 ° 49 '3 "  N , 9 ° 17' 9"  O .
