Scheralij Mirso ( Tajik Шералӣ Мирзо , also Sherali Mirzo , born May 24, 1967 in Hamadoni , Tajik SSR ) is a Colonel General of the Tajik Armed Forces and Acting Minister of Defense of Tajikistan .

Career

Welcome by İlham Əliyev , President of Azerbaijan, at a meeting of Defense Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States

Mirso was born in what is now the Hamadoni district in the far south of what was then the Soviet Union . He graduated from the Perm Military Academy in what is now Russia and joined the Tajik Armed Forces in 1994. In the Tajik Civil War he stood as a commander on the side of the government troops and fought against opposition groups mainly in what is now Chatlon Province in southern Tajikistan. After the end of the civil war, he attended the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in Moscow , before becoming Deputy Minister of Defense in Tajikistan in 2005. On December 5, 2006, Mirso was appointed commander of the border troops of Tajikistan and was thus also deputy head of the State Committee for National Security, the successor organization to the KGB in Tajikistan.

By a decree of the Tajik President Emomalij Rahmon on October 3, 2013, he became Tajikistan's defense minister as the successor to Sheralia Khayrulloyev, who had been in office since 1995. The change at the top of the ministry officially took place for health reasons; in fact, there had been criticism of the management of the defense ministry before, among other things because of the widespread corruption . The appointment of Mirso was interpreted as a sign of greater cooperation with Western partners in the area of security on the part of the government, since the Tajik border troops under Mirso had already received support from the United States and NATO . The main challenges for Mirso and Tajik security in general are the changed security situation in the southern neighboring country of Afghanistan after the withdrawal of foreign troops and the Kyrgyz-Tajik border conflict in the north of the country in the border area with Kyrgyzstan . In February 2018, Mirso was promoted to Colonel General by President Rahmon.
