The Schiffall (in the ÖK Schifffall ) is a 1221  m above sea level. A. high summit in the Grazer Bergland in Styria . It rises together with the neighboring Kreuzkogel above the Mittlerer Mur valley north of Frohnleiten .

The earliest written evidence is from around 1490 and is "Podschibalun". The name goes back to the Slovenian počivalo (resting place for the cattle when they come up to the cattle). The first syllable <pod> has been apocopied . The field name went over to the summit.

Location and geology

The double summit is on the right bank of the Mur on the municipality border between Pernegg in the north and Frohnleiten in the south. While the Schiffall is dominated by a wooded summit plateau, the Kreuzkogel ( 1181  m ), 400 meters northeast, forms a rocky ridge in the summit area. The geological structure consists of the locally occurring Hochlantsch limestone and Großerkogel limestone and is similar to that of the Röthelstein . Due to the water permeability of the carbonate rock, the Mur was able to cut into the once contiguous limestone block and separate the two mountain ranges from one another. The crystalline mica schists of the Styrian Randgebirge adjoin to the northwest .

Ascent

Schiffall and Kreuzkogel can be climbed from Mixnitz ( 447  m ) as well as from Laufnitzdorf ( 440  m ). The ascent trails are steep in places, but not difficult. Only the last stretch to the Kreuzkogel (ridge) and the transition between the two peaks require surefootedness. From the places mentioned you can expect 2 to 2 ½ hours ascent time.
