SchilliX is a live CD with an operating system designed in the form of an OpenSolaris- based distribution . The initiator of SchilliX is cdrecord developer Jörg Schilling, which is where the name comes from.

history

The idea for SchilliX arose in 2003 from the desire to create a live CD with Solaris similar to Knoppix . Since Solaris was not open source at the time, contact was made with Sun employees in autumn 2003 and discussions were held with them at the Sun Network Conference in December 2003 in the ICC Berlin . In spring 2004 it became apparent that an open source version of Solaris was imminent. Shortly after the start of the OpenSolaris pilot program on September 14, 2004, the participants were able to access the respective released Open Source portion of Solaris. The work on SchilliX could begin and at the end of January 2005 the first internal preliminary version of SchilliX was bootable.

The first external version of SchilliX was published on June 17th, 2005, just three days after the start of the OpenSolaris project, as the first OpenSolaris distribution ever by the developers Jörg Schilling, Fabian Otto, Thomas Blaesing and Tobias Kirschstein. As with OpenSolaris itself, the CDDL serves as the license for SchilliX .

Only then did SUN itself bring the Open Solaris distribution Solaris Express: Community Release with the KDE and Gnome graphical user interface onto the market, which required the free SunStudio, which was not included, for compilation.

aims

Initially, the focus at SchilliX was on accelerating the loading process, which means that the distribution did not have a graphical user interface until version 0.5.1 was released on March 2, 2006. In the current edition, too, the X.Org server must be started manually, but it is part of the distribution. The system can also be installed on a hard drive or a USB stick .

After the release of version 0.7.1 at the end of August 2010, the project management announced that, due to the factual discontinuation of OpenSolaris by Oracle , the OpenSolaris fork Illumos would be used as the basis in the future . A corresponding version 0.7.1i was presented shortly afterwards on September 6th. It requires a DVD as a data carrier and the downloadable version is compressed with LZMA2 .

Built on Illumos SchilliX-0.7.2 version is the first based on OpenSolaris distribution, in addition to the SunStudio - compiler and Java no other closed source -Tools longer needed. This was achieved through the development of an open source K&R C preprocessor , which is required by rpcgen , DTrace and the assembler to function. OpenSolaris can now be described as self-hosting .

Since December 2010, the Schillix project has been running a Schillix-ON sub-project as its own OpenSolaris fork. The goals of this sub-project are as close as possible to Solaris and POSIX interfaces, achieving 100% open source in the OpenSolaris base, and independence from company interests. Version 0.8, published on August 27, 2012, was the first version based on Schillix-ON.
