The Schirnau (rarely also called Schirnauer Au ) is the only outflow from the Wittensee . It runs completely in the municipality of Bünsdorf .
course
The Schirnau comes from the Wittensee near Bünsdorf (Rendsburg-Eckernförde district) and flows into the canal after 3 km in the 8 km west of Rendsburg.
The first part of the river runs through the village of Bünsdorf and contains some bridges. Then an agriculturally used area is passed through and then an uninhabited wetland area. The last section before Gut Schirnau is dammed. Before the Kiel Canal was completed , the Schirnau flowed into the Eider below the Schirnau estate; now it flows into the canal there.
Emergence
It is believed that the Schirnau valley was formed during the Vistula Ice Age by erosion from glacial melt water.
Nature reserve
A nature reserve Schirnautal is to be established, which covers part of the river.
Hiking trails
There is a hiking trail near the bank that accompanies part of the river from Bünsdorf.
