After the troops which Polish Kronarmee in August 1653 the fortress Schwanez entrenched had increased and the attachment, they were besieged by the united army of Cossacks and Crimean Tatars. After several Polish outbreaks failed in the first half of November, the situation became hopeless for the Poles. Epidemics and famine broke out in the fortress , so that at least 10,000 foot soldiers died by December and only 5,000 of the 20,000 cavalrymen were still operational. The Poles threatened a heavy defeat and Bohdan Khmelnyzkyj was confident that the Polish king would soon have to surrender.
However, his ally Khan İslâm III agreed. Giray signed a separate armistice with the Poles on December 16, 1653, so that Khmelnytskyi had to end the siege. He only achieved a renewal of the Treaty of Sboriw concluded on August 17, 1649 by the Poles, who were then able to leave the fortress.
Since the Tatars had proven to be unreliable allies, the Cossacks moved towards Pereyaslav after the fighting ended , where they concluded the Treaty of Pereyaslav with Tsarist Russia in 1654 .
