Schwanez (Ukrainian Жванець ; Russian Жванец , Polish Żwaniec ) is a village in the south of the Ukrainian Oblast Khmelnyzkyj with about 1500 inhabitants (2004).
history
The village, founded in 1431, was granted town charter in 1646 by King Władysław IV. Wasa . The place became known nationwide through the siege and battle of Schwanets of the Khmelnytskyi rebellion that took place here in 1653 . The battle ended in a tactical Cossack victory . However, since they were repeatedly betrayed by the Tartars allied with them, the following year the Ukraine treaty of Pereyaslav came about .
geography
Schwanez is the administrative center of the district council of the same name, to which the village of Braha ( Брага ⊙ ) with about 170 inhabitants also belongs.
The village is located in the southwest of Kamyanets-Podilskyj Rajon at the confluence of the 107-kilometer-long Schwantschyk in the Dniester, 20 km south of Kamianets-Podilskyj and about 120 km southwest of the Oblast capital Khmelnyzkyj . On the opposite bank of the Dniester is the Chernivtsi Oblast with the city of Chotyn . The castle ruins of Schwanez lie above the river mouth. The village is located on the N 03 trunk road and the T – 20–02 territorial road .
