Schlager der Woche is a documentary film by Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler of the DEFA studio for newsreels and documentaries, which was produced on behalf of the German TV broadcaster and directed by Karl Gass in 1962 .

action

Hit of the week was a very popular hit program of the RIAS Berlinin those years. But this documentary has nothing to do with that. Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler tries to uncover connections between the texts of some hits and current events. It begins in 1939 with the song That Can't Shake a Sailor from the film Paradies der Bachelors . In this context follows an excerpt from a Ufa-Tonwoche in which the commander-in-chief of the army Walther von Brauchitsch, during a visit to the Rheinmetall works in Düsseldorf ,sworethe arms industry workerson the importance of their work. This is followed by recordings from Danzig , the commentary of which Schnitzlercompareswith the situation in West Berlin . This is followed by shots of the attack by the German Wehrmacht on Poland.

When the war lasts longer than intended, the song It's All Over Past becomes popular. The title is accompanied by film footage showing the beginning of the decline of the German army. But that was not the end of it. The world won't end with Fromon by Zarah Leander from the UFA film The Great Love , another song asks to persevere. It is accompanied by recordings from German cities that have since been heavily destroyed by the air raids. The newsreel recording of a figure skating event in the destroyed Berlin Sports Palace is intended to convey that life goes on. But for the soldiers at the front, the war continues mercilessly. At the right time the song What can the soldier dream of came out. The title I know, a miracle will happen one day from the film The Great Love , But Germany is Destroyed is played more and more often .

Pictures from the Federal Republic of Germany : Accompanied by the hit comrade where are you , traditional and homeland associations march through German streets. Konrad Adenauer promises them that one day they will return to their homeland. The song Back to Home is played to match. This is followed by pictures of the fighting from the Second World War and a parade of the Bundeswehr . Here you can hear the hit Morgen sung by Ivo Robić . Again changing overlay of pictures from the Third Reich and politicians of the Federal Republic.
