Schlaichturm and pedestrian bridge

Schlaichturm is the name of a 24 meter high staircase and observation tower in the southern Baden town of Weil am Rhein . It is named after the engineering office Schlaich Bergermann und Partner , which designed and calculated the tower. The tower was erected on the occasion of the Green 99 State Garden Show and completed in 1999. The filigree tower structure, which is stabilized by pre-tensioned ropes, has structural similarities to the observation tower on the Killesberg in Stuttgart , which was built two years later and was designed by the same engineering office.

location

The Schlaichturm stands on the northern edge of the Dreiländerpark - the former site of the Grün 99 garden show . It overcomes a 16 meter high jump in terrain between the park and the hamlet of Leopoldshöhe housing estate . From the north is via the Market Street and the lever Place a pedestrian bridge from the side two flights of stairs to the stop Weil-garden city of Weil am Rhein-Lörrach railway branch, on the stair tower. The bridge spans the railway line in a slight curve and the B 317 that runs parallel to it in this section . To the south, the stair tower gives access to the leisure facilities of the three-country park.

description

Top of the mast and viewing platform facing east

The need for a stair tower to overcome the terrain profile results from the comparatively great height. Including the light profile of the runway, the difference to be overcome is 22 meters, which would have required a ramp length of 370 meters with a maximum gradient of 6% for the disabled. A ramp of this length would no longer have been justifiable in terms of the landscape.

From the platform to the north of the tower, a level 2.50 meter wide and 45 meter long pedestrian walkway leads 16 meters above the main road to a circular platform with a diameter of 10 meters. Two stairways lead to the slightly wider, cantilevered viewing platform . From this platform at a height of 20 meters you have a view of the park area, the lower Wiesental , the ridge of the St. Chrischona and neighboring Basel .

The tower with its two platforms is crossed in the middle by a steel mast. The top platform is held by twelve stay cables that branch off radially from the masthead. In the direction of the footbridge, two additional ropes carry the footbridge loads. From the lower platform, two 65 meter long and 1.20 meter wide spiral stairs lead to the Dreiländerpark. One is intended for ascent, the other for descent. The spiral stairs are additionally stabilized by vertical and diagonal ropes. The inner vertical ropes are attached directly to the upper suspensions, the outer ones are connected to the cantilever of the upper platform. At the lower and upper end of the mast there are spotlights that use fan-shaped mirrors to bathe the tower in indirect light at night, so that it can also be used by passers-by at night, and which take up the lines of the ropes.

Trivia

The tower has been mentioned several times in the press for being used for suicide or attempted suicide by falling down.
