etymology
The two variants of loops in the documents are due to the use of different stem vowels in noun formation:
- Old High German slîfan and Middle High German slîfen with the meaning "slide, slip out, slide down".
- Old High German and Middle High German slipfen "slide out, fall" and another weak verb Old High German and Middle High German slip, sleipfen "do slide, let".
The / a / forms created by monophthonging / ɑɪ / to / ɑ: / go back to the latter. The / i / forms go back to sli (p) fen .
Grinding names usually refer to artificial systems where something grinds or can be grinded. Loops and sanding paths in the forest are paths on which the felled wood can be dragged away. In arable and meadowlands there are unpaved - often temporarily laid out roads and import and export points - or sloping places; Old High German sleifa , sleipfa "loop, wooden slide"; Middle High German sleife , sleipfe "track, path created by grinding (of the wood)".
