The Hollerich lock is a lock system on the Lahn in the Hollerich district of the Seelbach community .
history
Rivers were used as transport routes for bulk goods early on, by the Middle Ages at the latest. The Duchy of Nassau began in the 1850s to develop the Lahn into a waterway to transport limestone and iron ore downstream towards the Rhine . In this context, it was also necessary to build locks . The Hollerich lock was built as a chamber lock between 1856 and 1859. The quarry stone masonry was faced with trachyte blocks from Selters in the Westerwald . In the first few years, due to the low water levels in the Lahn and there was no barrage downstream, the waterway could only be used effectively for six months. Only after further barrages with associated shipping sluices were built in Dausenau and Nassau in the 1920s , the Lahn could be navigated from Hollerich all year round with a minimum depth of one meter.
Building
The Hollerich lock has a chamber length of 34 meters and a chamber width of 5.26 meters. The height of lift or fall is 5.19 meters at mean water.
