The Monastery Mayrhofen , also known as Friedrichshafen Castle , is a former Benedictine monastery on Lake Constance in the area of today's city Friedrichshafen .
history
Hofen Monastery was founded around 1085 by Berta, the wife of Count Otto I von Buchhorn , as a Benedictine monastery . The neighboring parish church of St. Andreas and Pantaleon of the Counts of Buchhorn was subordinated to the monastery. Around 1100 the Welfs handed it over to their home monastery, Weingarten Monastery , which sent a provost to lead it. In 1215 the church was rebuilt. In the 13th century the monastery was named Kloster Hofen after the neighboring hamlet . The monastery area was under - in common with the eponymous village - the jurisdiction of the taverns of Schmalegg - Ittendorf .
After the monastery tried to become independent in the late Middle Ages, the abbot von Weingarten objected, accused the sisters of bad administration and had the monastery closed in 1419. The property of the monastery, two villages and some grit, were from then on administered by a provost as provost's office. In 1524 Kloster Hofen was sold by Überlingen to the city of Buchhorn, which in turn sold it to Weingarten Monastery in 1548.
During the Thirty Years' War the monastery buildings were burned down and destroyed by the Swedes in 1634. Thereafter, the monastery business was revived, 1695-1701 a stately convent building and a magnificent church were built under the direction of Christian Thumb and equipped with stucco work by father and son Schmuzer , in 1702 a priory was opened here by Weingarten .
In 1803 the imperial monastery Weingarten was secularized and came to Orange-Nassau , together with the monastery and village of Hofen . In 1804 it was confiscated by Austria and in the Peace of Pressburg was transferred to Württemberg by Napoleon in 1806 .
The village of Hofen was united with the city of Buchhorn to form the city of Friedrichshafen in 1810/11 . The monastery complex was assigned to the Württemberg court domain chamber, the church made available to the newly founded Protestant parish Friedrichshafen. From 1824 the monastery complex was converted into a summer residence for the kings of Württemberg.
Modern times
Since then the Hofen monastery has been referred to as Friedrichshafen Castle and the church as the Castle Church . To this day it is managed as a private property by the House of Württemberg . Since 1985 the annual summer festival of the Foundation for combining good with beautiful has been held on the grounds of the castle. The seat of the court chamber of the House of Württemberg is also located in the castle.
The 19th century Schlosshafensteg on the bank was extensively renovated in 2011.
