Helfenberg Castle

Around 1224 , a landlord de Helfenberch is named as the owner of the Helfenberg weir in a document from Hohenfurt Monastery , now in the Czech Republic . The predecessor of today's castle is believed to have been built as a castle around 1250 and expanded in 1270. Allegedly, the Helfenberg war memorial was erected on the earth substructure of this castle.

Around 1269 a Wulfing von Helfenberg is named as the owner in the documents of Schlägl Abbey , around 1277 an Arnold von Piber . Around 1285 the castle belonged to Mr. Piber zu Piberstein . The next documentary mention can be found around 1430, when the castle came into the possession of the Neundlinger family. In 1491 the castle went to Erasmus Greisenecker , at that time as a free owner . His widow inherited the castle around 1500, since they had no descendants, the castle passed to her brother and nephew. Due to inheritance disputes, Helfenberg fell to Christoph Künast in 1586 , who sold the castle to Christoph Artstetter von Wartberg .

From 1593 to 1630 the lords of Ödt zu Götzendorf owned the castle and had it completely rebuilt in 1607. The tower of the castle was planned as an extension of the castle at the time of the Piber. The current appearance was designed back then. Furthermore, an extensive library was set up in what is now the castle. Johann Elias Goedeler was a famous painter of the time, who was born in the castle in 1620. The Schifer family lived at the castle from 1630 to 1655. In 1655 Siegmund Schifer, husband of Barbara Regina von Oedt, sold the castle to Johann Friedrich Mörk von Gneisenau. The castle passed from the Mörks to the Seeauers in 1680. The castle chapel was also built during this time. The Seeau family stayed in the castle for around 200 years, and in 1705 they formed an entails with Piberstein Castle. Around 1750 the rule had 210 subjects.

The daughter of the last Count von Seeau sold the castle and the Helfenberg estate to Countess Olympia Revertera-Salandra . This family came from Spain via Naples under Emperor Charles V ; its members were often active as diplomats, politicians and high officials. At the end of the 19th century, the castle was rebuilt. The lord of the castle around 1930 was Peter Revertera-Salandra , Security Director of Upper Austria, he played an important role in homeland security . After him, Hippolyt Revertera-Salandra-Schwarzenberg was the owner of the castle until his death in 1989. The Revertera family still own the castle today.

Build today

The castle, built in 1607, is just under 300 meters above the old castle, nothing of which has survived. The north wing has a stately gate tower , the east wing is a two-story building with corner turrets. The square gate tower is covered with a steep hipped roof and is older than the rest of the building. It has a bell from 1592, below the clock is the coat of arms of the Revertera family. There is an inscription above the arched portal that mentions the builder. There is a round tower on the southeast side of the north wing. The east wing is the family's actual living quarters, the staff lives in the north wing.

Some of the interiors have Renaissance wooden ceilings. In the inner courtyard there is a hexagonal fountain that was created in 1625. The chapel closed in 1785 was restored under the Revertera and given a new altar. Around the castle there is a well-tended landscape park with native and exotic trees, which is open to the public. The former entrance was an avenue of yew trees that still exists today . The figures in the park are by the sculptor Magnus Angermeier, who lives in Eschelberg .
