Eschelberg is a village in the municipality of St. Gotthard in the Mühlkreis in the Upper Mühlviertel in the Urfahr-Umgebung district in Upper Austria with 198 inhabitants (as of January 2016).
history
The historical center of the village is Eschelberg Castle , first mentioned in 1205 and rebuilt in the Renaissance style towards the end of the 16th century , which has been owned by the Starhemberg family since 1674 . The area of activity of the Eschelberg District Court , which was temporarily located there, went far beyond today's municipal boundaries.
In the second half of the 20th century , Eschelberg was a nationally known and especially important weekend destination for Linzers . In addition to its proximity to Linz, this is due to the Reingruber (formerly Baumgartner) restaurant, which was operated there until 2015, and which has become a magnet for prominent people in the state capital .
