Karlsberg Castle is located on a small plateau below Karlsberg Castle, southwest of St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia . The building, built in the second third of the 17th century and modified in the 19th century, is a listed building .

history

The builder of the palace was Karl Rudolf Freiherr von Wangler, who owned the castle and rule of Karlsberg from 1635 to 1667. In 1687 Cardinal Johann Freiherr von Goëss acquired Karlsberg, which has been owned by the Goëss family ever since .

Building description

Karlsberg Castle is a four-wing, two-storey building that encloses a small, rectangular courtyard. The windows on the upper floor have a lintel . The arched portal on the west side of the castle is marked with the year 1697. Between the curved gable ends there is a cartouche with the coat of arms of Count Goëss.

In the castle there is an open, wooden corridor on the south side, in which there is a memorial stone from 1315, which comes from the castle, which has been in ruins since the 17th century. It shows the eagle owl, the heraldic animal of the Auffensteiner . There are also two Roman relief stones as well as the marble triton fountain , which was transferred from Hunnenbrunn Castle in 1948 , created in 1585 and bears the coat of arms of the Khevenhüller family , and various spoils from the old Karlsberg Castle.

Castle chapel

The south-east corner of the castle is built on a slightly higher level, a chapel , over whose north-west corner a bell tower like a roof turret with a lantern and onion helmet is placed. The chapel was donated by Johann Graf Goëss in 1728 and equipped with a small, carved altar with a picture of St. Charles Borromeo . Located on the north wall of the chapel room decorated with a Schnitzzier Oratory , which is crowned by two carved angels holding the double coat of arms of 1696 deceased Cardinal of Gurk and Baron Goëss. In the sacristy there is a cupboard built at the end of the 17th century with painted wings.
