The Ledenburg Castle is derived probably from the 15th century moated castle in the municipality of Bissendorf in Lower Saxony district Osnabrück .

Geographical location

Ledenburg Castle is around 500 m north-northeast of the Bissendorfer district of Nemden and around 500 m south of the Bissendorfer farmers' association Halle. history

Ledenburg Castle was probably built in the 15th century after the destruction of Holter Castle under the name Neue Burg Holte. Since this castle was used as a residence by the Leden family , it was later named Schloss Ledenburg.

In 1618 the castle was badly damaged in a fire, it was rebuilt between 1618 and 1627. When the von Leden family died out, it temporarily passed to the von Hammerstein family , who also owned Gesmold Castle , since 1622 it was the seat of the Barons von Grothaus , after which it passed to the Counts of Münster in 1776 . It has been owned by the Homann family of manufacturers in Dissen since 1951 .

Castle complex

Today, Ledenburg Castle, surrounded by moats, consists of two wings of the main house with a tower built in front. The gatehouse and the outbuildings formed a bailey. A sandstone bay window supported by massive consoles, which probably served to monitor the entrance, is the only exterior decoration of the castle with the entrance decorated with pilasters .

Inside the west wing there is an elegant three-flight staircase. This is an early North German example of this then new staircase shape, which replaced the spiral staircase of the Weser Renaissance . Also noteworthy are a fireplace decorated with stone figures and some porcelain tiled stoves.
