View of Sauerbrunn Castle in the present

The Sauerbrunn Castle is a Grade II listed house in the village Pöls-Oberkurzheim in the Styrian district Murtal in Austria in the field of cadastral Thalheim near the provincial road 114a at Pölshals Pass on the southern slopes of the Mur valley . Among them are twelve mineral springs , after which the castle got its name.

history

Side wing with arched coat of arms portal from the 16th century

The Schloss Sauerbrunn was in the years 1547-1552 from the Barons Francis of Teuffenbach very close to Sauerbrunn sources built and converted by him in 1567 to a hospital and poorhouse Foundation. This foundation still exists today. The neighboring fortified Sternschanze was built around the same time. After the Teuffenbachs, the barons of Saurau took over the castle.

Since 1578, the water from the mineral springs has been known as Thalheimer Sauerbrunn and sold as medicinal water .

The north and west wings of the castle have been partially removed. The bastion- like tower with its tent-shaped roof on the south corner was built around 1600. On the east side above the arched entrance portal is the coat of arms of the Freiherren von Teuffenbach. A wooden coffered ceiling has been preserved on the first floor of Sauerbrunn Palace to this day. There is a free-standing chapel from 1689 at the castle .

The castle was used on the basis of a lease from the 20th century to 2001 as a bottling plant for the “Thalheimer Schlossbrunnens” (formerly Thalheimer Sauerbrunn ). In 2008 the foundation sold the palace complex to Thalheimer Heilwasser GmbH , which in turn is owned by Dietrich Mateschitz Beteiligungs GmbH . In 2017, Thalheimer started to build a brewery near the castle that will use the springs. It should go into operation in 2018.

The castle is registered under the number 36658 (see list of listed objects in Pöls-Oberkurzheim ).
