History, infrastructure and sights

The Russenhöhle on Franz-Josef-Höhe is a site from the Paleolithic and Bronze Age .

Here the mule path ran over the Triebener Tauern , which was already important in pre-Roman times and was then part of the Roman road Virunum - Ovilava (Zollfeld - Wels), and the probably older, shorter path at Möderbrugg over the Rehrecksattel to the Strechau . The post office (Mansio) Viscellis , mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana , could have been in the area . A match with the months mentioned in the Antonini Itinerary was also considered. However, due to a lack of archaeological findings, their location is unknown. It is also unknown whether the Oberzeiring silver mine , which is proven by finds from the Celtic era, was in operation in Roman times. It is also uncertain whether the “ Römerbrücke ” at the entrance to the Blahbachtal actually dates from this period. If it marks the course of the Altstraße, it was on the right (Oberzeiringer) valley edge.

The Burgstallofen corridor at Franz-Josef-Höhe suggests an old castle . The Propstei Zeiring was donated to the Admont Abbey in 1074 by the Archbishop of Salzburg and was the administrative seat of the Benedictine possessions in the Pölstal until the 19th century. The Castle Hanfelden right in town was built for the road toll for the 1410th Here also rose Emperor Maximilian from. Later it belonged to Schwarzenberg . The high court in the Birkachwald and the gallows were mentioned in documents in 1574. The Liechtensteiners had the seat of the district judge in Unterzeiring. The high jurisdiction was the judgment of life and death, which was reserved only for the sovereign. The poor sinners chapel is also located here .

In 1856, Franz Xaver Neuper acquired Hanfelden Castle. The Neuper family, who come from Bad Mitterndorf and the Ennstal and came to Unterzeiring with Franz Xaver Neuper, have worked in Unterzeiring for the past 170 years as a haulage company, as iron barons with a hammer mill, as trades, as power plant owners and as large landowners embossed. The Neuper power station was built in 1910. It is not a listed building, but it is set up as a show power plant.

The obelisk on the Franz-Josef-Höhe in honor of Franz Josef I was destroyed during the Nazi era and was never rebuilt.
