The cavern saddle , also just horseback , is an 1854  m above sea level. A. high mountain pass of the Niedere Tauern in Upper Styria .

Location and landscape

The Reitercksattel connects the Strechautal , a side valley of the Paltental (to the Ennstal ) near Strechau , with the Bretsteintal , a side valley of the Pölstal (to the Murtal ) near Möderbrugg .

On the main ridge of the Niedere Tauern, the saddle separates the massif of the Hochschwung  ( 2196  m above sea level ) in the west with that of the Bösenstein (Great  2448  m above sea level ) in the east, with the Zinkenkogel  ( 2233  m above sea level ) on the Saddle. The Reiterck saddle is a possible way to differentiate the Wölzer Tauern from the Rottenmanner Tauern or Seckauer Tauern - there are several more precise concepts for the three groups here.

The Strechaubach goes northwards at the Reiteckalm to the Palten, which then flows into the Enns at Selzthal . The Authalbach goes south to the Bretsteinbach near Bretstein , and then to Pölsen, which goes to the Mur near Judenburg / Zeltweg . Here the two Auwinkelseen are in a Hochkar.

History and Development

The path over the Reiterck is probably a pre-Roman old path, which is the shortest connection between Judenburg and Liezen. In Roman times, the Virunum - Ovilava (Zollfeld / Carinthia - Wels / Upper Austria) road was built over Hohentauern , but the mule track was probably still used as a shortcut. It was also used in modern times. The Josephinian land survey (1790) shows the riser nor as regionally important route, with a side road on the Perwurzalm where the road from the Pölsquelltal over the Perwurzpolster came up.

Today a little-used trail runs over the saddle, along the main ridge the Zentralalpenweg passes it (onward hiking trail 02).
