Schmölz Castle

The Schmölz Castle is located in the community town of Schmölz market Küps in Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria .

Geographical location

Schmölz is located in the middle of the extensive valley landscape of the central Rodach . The favorable location of the place on this river, which served as a transport route in the Middle Ages , established the establishment of a total of ten noble residences in the area of the Küps market, to which Schmölz belongs. Nine of the ten properties still exist, some of which have been heavily modified or as ruins or ground memorials .

The castle stands at the beginning of Johann-Georg-Herzog-Straße in the direction of the Küps district of Wacholder.

history

Schmölz was first mentioned in 1194 as "Smoulnce", from 1264 "Smolenz" and from 1329 "Schmalnz". The barons of Redwitz were the lords and lords of the manor. The west wing of today's two-wing complex with two corner towers was built in 1502 and was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525 . The reconstruction with the western castle wall took place in 1536.

The poet Oskar von Redwitz had the palace expanded to include the south wing from 1855 to 1857; the plans for this came from Jakob Schmitt-Friderich . In 1861 the baron sold the headquarters of the Redwitz-Schmölz line to the barons of Egloffstein . In 1972 the Prümer family bought the building. The artist Paul Eddie Pfisterer acquired the property towards the end of 2017 .
