Stutensee Castle

The Stutensee Castle is approximately in the geographical center of the city Stutensee in the district of Karlsruhe in Baden-Wuerttemberg . When the communities Blankenloch (including Büchig ), Friedrichstal , Spöck and Staffort merged in 1975, Stutensee was chosen as the common name.

history

The castle was built in 1749 by Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden as a pleasure house or hunting lodge . The name goes back to the margravial stud founded in 1652 , which was created not far from fish ponds that Margrave Karl II had created around 1550/60. The stables were expanded considerably from 1669 after the Staffort Castle, which was blown up by Melac's troops, was released for demolition and the stones from the ruins were used as building material.

  • Around 1440, Margrave Jakob I of Baden built a customs post in Staffort Castle at the Pfinzübergang Staffort.
  • Around 1560, Margrave Karl II of Baden-Durlach laid out the Zwingelsee for fish farming based on Gottesau's model.
  • In 1652, Margrave Friedrich V von Baden-Durlach founded the Stutensee Stud to improve agriculture and national defense.
  • In 1676 and 1689, French troops destroyed the Staffort moated castle.
  • In 1677, Margravine Augusta enlarged the stud by buying land and expanding the stables.
  • In 1721 Margrave Karl Wilhelm placed a square half-timbered building with an octagonal dome as a hunting lodge between the stables .
  • In 1749, Margrave Karl Friedrich von Baden renovated the hunting lodge with stones from the Staffort castle ruins in the baroque style of the French classic and added additional ancillary buildings according to plans by the Italian architect Leopoldo Retti .

In the castle garden there is an old stock of trees that contain numerous old oaks which are registered or registered as natural monuments. The oldest oak is estimated to be 900 years old.

Today there is a youth facility of the district of Karlsruhe near the castle. In the summer of 2004, 50% of the castle became the property of the Karlsruhe district and the Rhine-Neckar district . The Karlsruhe district is now the sole sponsor of the Schloss Stutensee gGmbH youth facility.
