history

Until 1814, the moat of Darmstadt Castle was fed with water from the Darmbach and this from the sewage from the neighboring old town , which gave off an unbearable stench in the summer months. The master builder Johannes Hess (1786–1837) therefore proposed a drainage and the establishment of a botanical garden on the newly reclaimed site, which Grand Duke Ludwig I also commissioned. The court gardener Johann August Schnittspahn (1763–1842) was entrusted with the horticultural care . Due to the need for space, the botanical garden was relocated to today's Herrngarten in 1830 . A small game park and a pleasure garden were created in the castle moat .

Until the 20th century, the park was a circular path with a curved network of paths and dense shrub and tree plantings alternating with lawns through the moat. The network of paths led past a pond in the east of the castle moat.

On the night of fire in Darmstadt from September 11 to 12, 1944, the castle burned down to the outer walls. After the Second World War , the war rubble was stored in the garden for years.

The TU Darmstadt as the “castle owner” and 200 Darmstadt citizens redesigned the eastern part of the moat. This part was opened in June 2014. The western part was completed in June 2017 and opened to the public when Heinerfest opened . The southern part, and thus the entire moat, should be rebuilt by 2020.
