The castle medal was a medal commissioned by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1857 , which commemorated the new construction and inauguration of the Schwerin Palace and was awarded by the Grand Duke to people involved in the construction.

The medal designed by the Schwerin medalist Hieronymus (Heinrich) Wilck has a diameter of 45.10 millimeters and weighs 42.57 grams (in silver). As an ingenious design principle, it shows the old Schwerin castle from the lake side on one side, including the Latin inscription CASTELLUM VETUS SVERINENSE and the signature H WILCK FEC [IT] , on the other side a view of the new castle from the city side, including the inscription FREDERICUS FRANCISCUS DENUO CONDIDIT MDCCCLVII .

The medal was made in gold, silver and a bronze alloy.

Award

The princely guests of honor at the inauguration ceremony on May 26, 1857 received the gold medal.
