history

From 1675, the Princely Eggenberg Court Comedians, a permanent ensemble of actors in the service of Johann Christian von Eggenberg (1641–1710). On May 1, 1676, Johann Georg Gettner (1641–1696) and Johann Carl Samenhammer (1648–1728) were appointed artistic directors of the Princely Eggenberg Court Comedians. On behalf of the prince, who was a great art lover and patron , the theater was built in its current form from 1680 to 1682 as a permanent venue for the court comedians.

repertoire

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the repertoire of the Český Krumlov stage was made up of texts from various origins and reception phases: there were remnants of imports from English comedians, including Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Lier, as well as prose translations of top titles from Dutch and, above all, Italian dramatic literature (several by Giacinto Andrea Cicognini (1606-1651)). But also arrangements of Italian opera libretti, which the prince welcomed as a reflection of the Venetian music scene. Due to the plague and the danger of the Turks there was a migration of the outpatient stage management. The Český Krumlov theater was cut off from professional text distribution for a long time and developed a certain archaism in the repertoire.

Baroque stage

The palace theater includes one of the two original baroque theaters around the world, whose stage machinery is fully functional. The entire stage mechanism is made of wood and requires a total of 35 people to operate it. Without interrupting the game, new scenes can be created from a pool of 17 sets, such as a pillared hall, military camp, garden, city, dungeon or jungle by inserting backdrops . Originally preserved are 11 brochures , 40 festivals and 250 backdrops as well as 50 effect machines and over 200 lighting fixtures. The construction is supplemented by walkways, lacing and lower stage with a complete set of machinery with movable frames, hoisting winches, rollers, rope guides and a sliding ramp. The stage floor is still the same as it was originally, which contains slidable and hinged panels and four recesses.
