Smear origin

The Schmiechquelle

The Schmiechquelle is located in a crevice above Springen, a hamlet belonging to the Schelklingen district of Gundershofen. The Schmiech origin is a rich karst spring without a source pot. It pours an average of 280 liters per second (min. 60 l / s., Max. 900 l / s.).

Water underpass at the Heilig-Geist-Spital

In the upper Schmiechtal the water flows eastwards through Springen, Gundershofen, Sondernach, Hütten, Talsteusslingen, Teuringshofen and Schmiechen. In Talsteußlingen a historic mill wheel turns in the Schmiech. This water wheel was in operation in the Talsteusslinger Mühle from 1911 to 1985, in 1997 it was restored by the Hütten volunteer fire brigade and placed at its current location as a show water wheel .

Former pumping station of the Alb water supply

In Teuringshofen there is a museum with information about the beginning of the Alb water supply . Karl Ehmann had this technical cultural monument built in 1870, it can be visited on Sundays and by appointment. The pumping station in Teuringshofen is no longer in operation today, but the old machines are still there.

The Schmiech in the Urdonautal

In Schmiechen, the river bends its knees and flows east past the Lutheran Mountains to the south in the valley of the Urdonau , against the direction of the Danube at that time. In the Allmendingen district, the Schmiech was renatured around the turn of the millennium as part of the Siegental land consolidation. It meanders here a bit along the federal road 492 , which is part of the Upper Swabian Baroque Road between Blaubeuren and Ehingen . At the time of the toad hike from the Schmiech to the Schmiechener See , special care is required in this section of the road. During the renaturation measures, several toad underpasses and fences were built, so that the situation has in the meantime eased somewhat.

The Schmiech flows through Allmendingen where you left the Jump flows, which rises in a larger karst spring. The Schmiech Ehingen reaches via Berkach. There it is used to supply the Sappi pulp and paper mill , which draws around 10.6 million m³ of water from the river every year (~ 20 m³ / min). South of the city the Schmiech finally flows into the Danube.
