action

Tom will be a grade 1a school child from September 1st. In summer he visits the building of the polytechnic high school "Karl Liebknecht" for the first time and gets to know his future class teacher Mr. Blinse. He shows them the gym, performs a little experiment in the chemistry room and acts mysteriously when he stands with the children in front of the “magic room”. They are not allowed to look inside, but teacher Blinse promises to do so from September 1st.

When Tom comes home, he meets the neighbor's child Nelli in front of his apartment. She proudly shows him her wobbling tooth and says that she will soon be going to school. Although she is a year younger than Tom, his grandmother always said that you go to school when the first tooth wobbles. Tom's teeth don't wobble, so he doubts whether they'll even take him on September 1st. His big sister Nico, who, like him, lives with his grandmother, says that school is not nice, and the saleswoman Ms. Griese also indicates that the good childhood will be over and tears will flow. Tom is torn about what to believe. He turns to worker Karl, for whom he has been doing small shopping for some time out of friendship, and asks him for advice. Karl thinks Tom has to overcome his fear. He should just go to school and ask teacher Blinse.

Tom sets off, with Nelli secretly following him. The school is currently teaching and the corridors are deserted. Tom secretly looks into the "magic room" and recoils when an owl looks at him. He ventures into the room with Nelli and soon discovers that the room is full of stuffed animals. They stroke the owl and bathe the stuffed mole because it is dusty. Since the mole loses its shape, Tom quickly puts it in his pocket. The bell rings and Nelli hides. Suddenly there is student Andreas in the room who wants to fetch the stuffed school owl Paula from teacher Blinse for the next lesson. He is surprised to find Tom in the room and wants to throw him out, but realizes that something is bothering the boy. When Tom asked whether the school was good or bad, Andreas replied with a comparison: The school is like a climbing frame. You have to be motivated to step on the scaffolding and not be afraid of the tall rungs. Tom realizes that he needn't be afraid of school.

Teacher Blinse appears to look for Andreas. He recognizes Tom and is glad that Andreas was able to help him. Ashamed, Tom hands him the wet mole, which is brought to the caretaker. Teacher Blinse locks the "magic room". Outside school, Tom notices that he has forgotten Nelli. She is locked in the room and is scared. When Tom stands perplexed in front of the room, the caretaker Mrs. Buttke appears. She explains to Tom that the "magic room" is actually the biology room and unlocks the door. Before Tom follows Nelli, Mrs. Buttke shows the boy the blown-dry mole and Tom is relieved. With Nelli he runs to worker Karl and tells him that his doubts are over and that he will be a school child from September 1st. Then he walks home with Nelli.
