Schwabsburg is a district of the city of Nierstein in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate with around 1,600 inhabitants. Schwabsburg was an independent municipality until 1970 and takes its name from the Schwabsburg castle there .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1257. There is evidence of a Roman settlement dating back to the 3rd century AD. The Romans apparently planted the first vines. Viticulture still plays an important role in the village today. At the beginning of the 13th century, the Hohenstaufen built a castle, of which only the angular, widely visible tower has survived and which is considered to be Schwabsburg's landmark.

With Dexheim and Nierstein, the place initially belonged to a community of imperial villages in the Niersteiner Mark . King Ludwig the Bavarian pledged this to the Archdiocese of Mainz in 1315 , and in 1375 the pledged property fell to the Electoral Palatinate . The eagle in the coat of arms, which has been detectable in seals since the 17th century, indicates the earlier imperial immediacy.

In 1970 Schwabsburg was incorporated into Nierstein.

Attractions

The Protestant church in Schwabsburg is next to the castle tower the landmark of Schwabsburg. It was built in 1892 in neo-Gothic style. Its mighty tower with the three distinctive intermediate gables of the roof are a specialty in Rheinhessen. A previous building was built between 1613 and 1616, but the church was first mentioned in 1363; it was consecrated to Saint Pancras. The sanctuary houses a modern wooden cross by the artist Gustav Nonnenmacher. A bronze figure of Christ rises in front of the cross, arms raised invitingly. The risen Christ leaves the skulls on the cross below. At the rear on the mighty gallery, the Walcker organ dominates. There are five large church windows on both sides showing the Evangelists and Martin Luther. The particularly colorful window in the chancel shows the resurrection of Jesus. All windows were designed by Heinrich Beiler, a glass painting company from Heidelberg, and donated by Schwabsburger families.
