geography

Geographical location

Schwandorf lies on the plateau of the Hegaualb on the western Swabian Alb .

Local division

Schwandorf consists of the four villages Oberschwandorf , Unterschwandorf , Volkertsweiler and Holzach .

history

Holzach, today the smallest district of the community Neuhausen ob Eck, was mentioned in a document in 785 on the occasion of a donation to the monastery of St. Gallen as Hoolzaim ; later the place was named Holzheim and then in the Fürstenberg document book in 1480 for the first time Holzach .

Schwandorf itself was mentioned in 1145 and at that time belonged to the Landgraviate of Nellenburg . In a treatise on the Landgraviate of Nellenburg, one of its nine camera locations is named Madach , which comprised Oberschwandorf, Unterschwandorf, Holzach and Volkertsweiler and which came to Nellenburg with these towards the end of the 12th century.

In 1465 Schwandorf became Austrian . The social situation of the Madacher office in the first half of the 19th century, in which the four villages were combined, was not particularly good; Austrian officials from 1785 and Baden officials from 1851 reported poverty . There were no jobs in agriculture, nor was the industrial sector so advanced that it could have put people on wages. For the numerous craftsmen who had settled in Schwandorf at the time, there were correspondingly few clients. In the middle of the 19th century there were 14 linen weavers, eight shoemakers, four tailors, four wagons and five carpenters in Schwandorf.

The community of Schwandorf was part of the Habsburg county of Nellenburg until 1806. After the territorial reform enforced by Napoleon, Schwandorf fell to Württemberg for a short period from 1806 to 1810 . Then it came to Baden , but was not assigned to the Messkirch district , but to the Stockach district. There were no changes to the new division of state responsibilities for Neuhausen ob Eck, which had belonged to Württemberg since 1481. From then on, in addition to the denomination, the Baden-Württemberg border, which was a state border until the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, separated Schwandorf from Neuhausen.

In 1936 the office of Meßkirch was dissolved and Schwandorf was incorporated as an independent municipality into the Stockach office. This resulted in the Stockach district in 1939 . Holzach's last rod holder, the seal of which has been archived, lost its function in 1936. The four previously independent districts were then combined to form the entire municipality of Schwandorf.

In the course of the administrative reform on January 1, 1973, Schwandorf was incorporated into Neuhausen ob Eck.

coat of arms

Schwandorf coat of arms
Blazon : "Under a golden (yellow) shield head, inside a blue deer pole, in silver (white) a continuous red cross."
Justification of the coat of arms: The stag stem comes from the coat of arms of the county of Nellenburg , to which the village belonged until 1805. The red cross reminds of the affiliation to the diocese of Constance .

Regular events

The Dorffasnet in Schwandorf is based on the history of the fool's figure of the Schwandorfer castle witches , similar to the nickname "Austrian" with which the Worndorfer Schwandorf refer. The reason is the historical affiliation of Schwandorf to Upper Austria before 1806.
