The Death in the House is a German television film by Jobst Oetzmann from 2019. It is the second film contribution to the ZDF crime film series Schwartz & Schwartz with Devid Striesow and Golo Euler in the leading roles.

action

Private detective Andi Schwartz is commissioned by Gerd Weisshappel to investigate the death of his daughter, which the police assume was just an unfortunate accident. Weisshappel, however, is convinced that the real estate developer Hans-Jochen Steuffers murdered his daughter. Andi convinces his brother Mads, who had to give up his police service, to take over the case with him. Weisshappel is an entrepreneur himself and came to Berlin with his three children to invest in a large, new residential project. In this context, his daughter had started an internship at Steuffers. In order to watch the man on the fingers, Andi tries to sneak into his company, which Steuffers quickly sees through. Meanwhile, Mads gets in touch with his former police colleague Iris Doppelbauer and can thus gain insight into the investigation files. So he receives the information about a construction site guard who may have witnessed the murder, but shortly after Andi had met with him for a first conversation, he was found dead. With this, Commissioner Doppelbauer is now convinced that the Weisshappel case is probably a murder and she is now working closely with the detectives. Together they question Johanna Weisshappel's work colleague and find out that it was not Steuffers but Mirko Lehmann, real estate agent for the city administration, who was interested in Johanna because she impressed him.

After Steuffers was suddenly found dead after a fall from a window, Gerd Weisshappel terminated the contract with Andi because, in his opinion, the job was now done. Andi, however, is convinced of Steuffer's innocence and wants to convict the real murderer at all costs. So he came up with a plan that his brother will not like again. Without his knowledge, he persuades his sister-in-law to work for her as a decoy in order to persuade Mirko Lehmann to make a confession. With the help of Commissioner Doppelbauer, Jasmin Schwartz is " wired up " and contacted Lehmann in a prepared manner. She pretends to be an author and to write a crime thriller whose story she wants to hear his opinion about. She describes Johanna Weisshappels story in detail, so that Lehmann has to recognize himself in it. In the novel, the victim (Johanna) found out that a representative of the city (Lehmann) regularly did business with a real estate developer (Steuffen) and ensured that he was repeatedly awarded the contract for selected properties. The first murder brought a second and a third because everything got out of hand. After Lehmann lost his nerve while listening to "his story" and wanted to flee, Commissioner Doppelbauer arrested him.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv judged: The first “The good impression that the crime series 'Schwartz & Schwartz' […] developed by Alexander Adolph and Eva Wehrum left on its debut also confirms the second, dense and winding story Episode that Jobst Christian Oetzmann staged fluently and quickly, with a pleasantly modern, but not overstylistic impression. 'Death in the House' shows what appeal private detective investigations can have in relation to the police routine, and […] This time Striesow in particular delivers delicious treats and finds his master in Hinrichs. "

In Quotenmeter.de Martin Seng evaluated: "Two compelling main characters, an interesting and sophisticated case provided with a good sized and pleasant touch of humor. 'Schwartz & Schwartz - Death in the House' is a strong crime thriller that is ideal evening entertainment. Hopefully the ZDF will decide in the future to continue the series at the same level. "

Markus Schünemann from the NRZ only said: "Humorous brother-buddy thriller, without any action and yet with a lot of momentum."
