action

Mathias Schwartz, who is only called Mads by everyone, works as a detective at the KDD - Criminal Investigation Service . In addition to various crimes, he is now also dealing with his first murder. The husband of Giulia Jasper, who died of anaphylactic shock , claims it was a coincidental accident, but Mads has doubts. In his job he repeatedly meets people who appear very convincing and so he has learned to only trust the facts and his observations. Dr. Jasper describes in a strikingly precise manner what had happened before his wife's death: At 10:00 p.m. she wanted to toast her 40th birthday with her guests and shortly afterwards she collapsed. The drinks were delivered by a party service and made sure in advance that there was no nutty drink with them, because Giulia Jasper was allergic to peanuts and walnuts. As a conscientious criminalist, Mads takes a closer look at the corpse and discovers a striking number of bruises of different ages. So he calls the homicide squad and hands over the case. Inspector Iris Doppelbauer appears and Mads gives her the reason for his decision that he cannot rule out a relationship act. While he was still writing the minutes of the case, he received a call from his boss that the homicide squad wanted to "borrow" him from now on. Commissioner Doppelbauer is surprised and also a little annoyed because that would have been her case. Why her boss, Petra Steinle, made such a decision will only become clear to her later.

Meanwhile, Mads is called to the nursing home because his father has been weak. There he unexpectedly meets his brother Andi, with whom he had no contact for several years. The relationship between the two is strained due to an incident in the past. Allegedly, Andi has his own security company that is doing well. He elegantly conceals that this is not the case in truth. When he happens to find out that his brother of all people is supposed to solve the murder of the woman he was in love with, he comes up with a plan. In his own way, he secretly wants to help clear the case and hold the husband of his lover to account. To do this, he quickly settles in the family of his brother and procures spy software so that he can monitor Mads on his cell phone and also on the company PC. So he is always up to date with the latest police investigations and thus learns about Jasper's son Linus, who is unstable, drug addict and completely a slave to his father. Andi cleverly contacts Linus and sneaks into his trust. He uses him to gain access to Jasper's otherwise strictly secured villa and learns from Linus that Giulia had broken into his father's secret office shortly before her death. That explains Andi why she gave him a USB stick for safekeeping.

Mads learns from the coroner that it was actually the cocktail that caused the shock because it contained a British lemonade that is based on a nut derivative, but was not listed on the label and was therefore not known to the party service. After extensive research, Mads is certain that Jasper, as an expert, should have known this because a similar case was reported in the specialist press in Great Britain a few years ago. He presents his entire investigation, which, according to the housekeeper, shows that the Jaspers often had arguments, his new boss. She praises Mads for his conscientious work and says Jasper is so prominent and moral that it will be easy to "pin" him. But things won't be that easy, because Jasper goes on the offensive and unceremoniously files a complaint against Mads. This makes it difficult to proceed and Mads has to find solid evidence against Jasper to convince the prosecutor. Petra Steinle persuades Mads to appear a little more self-confident in the upcoming interrogation of Jasper and to confront him with her evidence against him. Mads is skeptical that this would not be too early and that they would give up their trump cards, but Steinle encourages him to do so. As it had to happen, Jasper is not so easy to be "nailed down" and always has a plausible explanation for the alleged evidence. The interrogation fails and Steinle claims that he didn't mean it that way. Accordingly, the public prosecutor does not bring charges because the evidence is almost entirely based on assumptions. The investigation is closed and Mads is supposed to go back to the KDD. He doesn't understand because he followed Steinle's strategy exactly. Only the information from Commissioner Doppelbauer opened his eyes: Steinle had brought him into her team because the prosecution was supposed to fail and she did not want to impose this on her people. Now he has served his purpose and can go. When he also finds out that Petra Steinle herself has a disabled daughter, he makes the mistake of accusing her of being dependent on Jasper, who is also socially committed to disadvantaged and disabled children, for her daughter and her further support. As a result, she starts to counterattack and makes Mads "ready". His house is searched after the spy software was discovered on his office PC. Mads realizes that only his brother can be behind it again and he confronts him. Mads explains that he didn't want to harm him. As Andi had already suspected, the murder would go unpunished because nobody wants to take serious action against such a renowned doctor and benefactor. He now reveals to Mads that he knew Jasper's wife and knew of her that he had done bad things to his patients and secretly filmed them. He just wants Jasper to be punished and he wants to give Mads the evidence for that. However, he is not convinced of Andi's help because it would only make things worse. His suspension is the best evidence of this. They split up in an argument, and Andi forces his efforts to have Jasper exposed. But he underestimates his opponent. Jasper got suspicious a while ago and lets Linus lure Andi into his villa. Jasper and two of his security guards await him there and they brutally beat Andi. In his remarks, Jasper leaves no doubt about his guilt. Meanwhile, Mads worries and fears that his brother could do something again. With a certain premonition, he asks Commissioner Doppelbauer to look for his brother with him, whom he suspects to be with Jasper. There he finds Andi seriously injured and has him immediately taken to the clinic. Jasper has already called the police because he had an "intruder" with him, which he now wants to report.

Mads makes one last attempt on the regular way to hold Jasper accountable and informs the prosecutor of the existence of the films documenting Jasper's abuse. After realizing that this does not work, he chooses Andi's methods. He looks up Jasper, beats him up and threatens to publish the films that Giulia had copied. As a sign of his first reparation, he should withdraw his complaint against his brother and make sure that he is fine in the hospital. Jasper agrees and for fear of further consequences he ends up shooting himself with his hunting rifle, which is portrayed as an accident in the media.

reception

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv judged: The first “'Schwartz & Schwartz' [...] does not bore you with the 9999th Whodunit, but rather shows early on that the oh-so-honorable husband of the dead has dirt on his stick. The crime thriller works primarily through identification and compassion: even the black sheep of the family has our sympathy. This is also due to the great Striesow [...] the other line-up with Euler, Gröschel, Hobmeier and Martinek is also very promising. The final third is exciting, the resolution of the case is unconventional - and the curiosity about how things will continue in 2019 is correspondingly great. "

In Quotenmeter.de Julian Miller evaluated: The challenge for this series will be: "How can one already in pilot arg abstruse design: the dreamy impostor helping his cop brother in determining hold credible even to begin in the long run? Except for this major problem, the first edition impresses with a largely viable concept, which lives particularly from the strong cast with Golo Euler and Devid Striesow in the main roles and the largely unpretentious narrative style. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff wrote for the Frankfurter Rundschau : “The start of the new ZDF crime series with Devid Striesow and Golo Euler as unequal brothers, thanks to an excellent ensemble, makes you want more.” “Thanks to the diverse role models [...] cover the characters [ …] Covers a broad spectrum, whereby Striesow certainly has the most unusual part thanks to a few slightly comical moments, especially since he gives the film a relaxing lightness in between. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best rating (thumbs up) and said: “The resolution is not entirely satisfactory, but proof of the originality of Rainer Kaufmann's sometimes tough crime comedy.” Conclusion: “Despite deductions for plausibility: a entertaining series debut. "

Audience rating

The first film in the crime series saw 5.86 million viewers. This resulted in a market share of 19.7 percent.
