The black-finned pig wrasse ( Bodianus loxozonus ), often also called black-stripe wrasse or Trotters duke wrasse , occurs in the western and central Pacific at depths of 3 to 40 meters. There are two subspecies, the western B. loxozonus loxozonus lives from Vietnam , the Ryūkyū and Ogasawara Islands to the Marianas and the Marshall Islands . The distribution area of ​​the eastern subspecies B. loxozonus trotteri extends from the Line Islands over the Marquesas , the Society Islands , Tuamotu to Rapa Iti .

The black fin pig wrasse can grow to be 47 centimeters long. Its body is light, reddish and has a fine vertical stripe pattern. A large black spot on the back of the back runs obliquely down to the lower rays of the caudal fin. With increasing age, the stain becomes increasingly narrow. Adult specimens are dark, reddish brown. All unpaired fins have black zones. It is often confused with Bodianus macrourus .

The long dorsal fin of the blackfin hoglipfish is supported by 12 hard rays and 9 to 11 soft rays, the anal fin has 3 hard and 11 to 12 soft rays.

Way of life

The black-finned pig wrasse inhabits clear lagoons , rocky and outer reefs as solitary animals . It mainly eats hard-shelled invertebrates such as molluscs and crustaceans .
