The Schwedtsee belongs to the Fürstenberg lake area . It is one of the three lakes that surround the town of Fürstenberg / Havel in the Oberhavel district in Brandenburg .

Geographical location and hydrography

It has an area of around 750,000 square meters and is up to 3.50 meters deep, its maximum dimension is 1.2 × 0.6 kilometers. The lake is traversed by the Havel on its southern edge from west to east from Lake Baalensee in the direction of Stolpsee .

history

The lake was first mentioned in a document in 1299 ( stagnum Zwett ). Along with 38 other lakes named above, it was part of the initial equipment of the Himmelpfort monastery . The monastery had the sole right of use on this lake. The name is derived from an old Polish basic form * Svět to * svět = light; the basic form occurs more often in Slavic water names. In the inheritance register of the Badingen and Himmelpfort rulers in 1574 it is called the Schwedt , and in 1667 the Lake Schweet . In 1719 it was referred to as Schwed See , and around 1800 it was spelled Schwedt . The northern part of the lake belonged to the Ravensbrück municipality until 1950 .

The Ravensbrück memorial site borders the northeastern shore of the lake. Because the ashes from the crematorium of the Ravensbrück concentration camp were poured into the lake, it is considered "the largest mass grave in the Ravensbrück camp".

use

The Schwedtsee (SwS) at OHW-km 59.9 belongs to the 97-kilometer-long federal waterway Obere Havel-Wasserstraße (OHW) of waterway class I; The Eberswalde Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible .

The lake is managed by the Krempig lake fishery.
