The Swiss School Barcelona ( Spanish Escuela Suiza de Barcelona , Catalan Escola Suïssa de Barcelona , ESB for short), located in the Spanish city of Barcelona ( Catalonia ), is one of the Swiss schools abroad . It includes playgroups, kindergarten, primary, secondary and high school levels and is a member of the Association of International Schools of Barcelona (BISA). It was the first school in Spain to award the Swiss secondary school diploma , the Matura .

concept

The school sees itself as a multicultural school whose educational model is based on excellence, the principles of Swiss pedagogy and the "harmonious and respectful coexistence" of Swiss, Spanish and Catalan cultures. The educational program is regulated by educationsuisse , an association promoting Swiss education and presence abroad, and sponsored by the Canton of Bern. With the educational qualification of the Swiss School in Barcelona, the students achieve two things: the Spanish Abitur as well as the Swiss Matura, which at the same time corresponds to the Swiss secondary school diploma and the Spanish Selectividad . This opens the doors to universities in many countries.

history

The Swiss School in Barcelona around 1930

In 1919 the Societé de l'Ecole Suisse de Barcelona was founded and a few months later, on October 9, 1920, the Swiss School in Barcelona opened at 17 Calle Findons. The second school year starts with 13 students. Since the school was founded, the focus has been on the diversity of nationalities and equal opportunities.

In 1924, the Swiss school with 145 students from 13 different nations moved to Alfonso-XII-Strasse. In the 1930s, Catalan was added to the school program, although the school was closed during the Spanish Civil War .

In 1967 a new federal law grants funds for the improvement of its facilities, culminating in the inauguration of a new school building. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Swiss School was recognized as an international school by both the Spanish authorities and the Generalitat de Catalunya and the city of Barcelona. In 1993 the first exams for the Swiss Matura were held, and for the first time this title was awarded in Spain.

In 2000 the parents' school is founded and the new institute building is inaugurated. Demolition work on the old building begins in 2005 and a modern building with workshops for artistic training, modern laboratories, classrooms with computer support and a large relaxation room on the roof will be inaugurated in its place. In 2019 the school celebrates its 100th anniversary.
