Schwende is a place in the district of the same name in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden in Switzerland.

Names

In the 12th century the name Swendi or swandjan was mentioned. It comes from the old German expression to make shrinking (= clearing of the forest).

geography

Schwende is not an actual village, but a typical scattered Appenzell settlement . The center of the village consists only of the church with the cemetery, the parish house and school house including the gymnasium and the multi-purpose building with the kindergarten. There are a few houses and three inns nearby.

In the center of the village is the last stop (stop on request) of the Appenzellerbahn before the Wasserauen terminus of the Gossau SG – Wasserauen railway line .

Around a hundred children from the villages of Weissbad , Schwende, Wasserauen and the surrounding areas attend primary school and kindergarten .

Schwende is the starting point for hikes to the Ebenalp , Äscher, Wildkirchli , Schäfler and Säntis . There is a ski lift and the natural ice rink on Glandenstein .

history

In addition to the parish church of St. Martin , the remains of a tower existed until 1830, which was probably the seat of the Lords of Doppelstein , Ministeriale of the Abbot of St. Gallen . The Schwendner are said to have destroyed it and thus triggered the Appenzell Wars . At the beginning of the 21st century, the Rhode Schwende claimed a certain primacy over the other inner Rhodes, which may have been due to this historical event.

In 1767 Schwende became a branch office of Appenzell and in 1914 an independent parish. In 1767 the church was built in place of a chapel from 1623. It was replaced in 1929 by the neo-baroque building by Adolf Gaudy .
