Sclerocactus uncinatus is a species of plant in the genus Sclerocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). English common names are "Brown-Flowered Hedgehog", "Catclaw Cactus", "Turk's-Head Cactus" and "Texas Hedgehog".

description

Sclerocactus uncinatus usually grows individually with spherical to cylindrical, bluish green shoots that reach heights of 18 to 27 centimeters with diameters of 10 to 12 centimeters. There are about 13 wavy ribs that are heavily humped. There are sharp furrows between the cusps. The one to five hook-shaped central spines are directed upwards or obliquely outwards. They are yellow with a reddish tip and 8 to 13 inches long. The seven to ten radial spines have a length of 2.5 to 5 centimeters. The upper ones are flattened and brightly colored, the lower ones hook-shaped and somewhat purple in color.

The funnel-shaped flowers are reddish brown and appear from the furrows of the areoles . They are 2 to 4 inches long and 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Sclerocactus uncinatus is distributed in southern Texas and in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Nuevo León and Tamaulipas .

It was first described as Echinocactus uncinatus in 1848 by Henri Guillaume Galeotti . Nigel Paul Taylor placed it in 1987 in the genus Sclerocactus . Synonyms are Ferocactus uncinatus (Galeotti) Britton & Rose , Hamatocactus uncinatus (Galeotti) Orcutt , Echinomastus uncinatus (Galeotti) FMKnuth , Glandulicactus uncinatus (Galeotti) Backeb. , Thelocactus uncinatus (Galeotti) WTMarshall , Ancistrocactus uncinatus (Galeotti) LDBenson and Pediocactus uncinatus (Galeotti) Halda .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

A synonym for the subspecies Sclerocactus uncinatus subsp. crassihamatus is Echinocactus mathssonii Berge ex K.Schum. (1898).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
