The black mackerel ( Scombrolabrax heterolepis ) is a member of the perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). The animals live in subtropical and tropical areas of the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans at depths of 100 to 900 meters. The species is absent in the eastern Pacific and the south-eastern Atlantic.

features

The black mackerel is a maximum of 30 centimeters long. It is dark brown in color, has a vorstreckbares mouth, the edges of Vorkiemendeckel and gill covers are cut. The number of vertebrae is 30. The swim bladder is provided with thin protuberances that extend into the bubble-like protuberances of the vertebrae 5 to 12.

Fin formula : dorsal 12 / 14–16, anal 2–3 / 16–18.

Systematics

The black mackerel combines characteristics of the not closely related real perch (Percidae) and the two clearly more closely related families of the mackerel and tuna (Scombridae) and the snake mackerel (Gempylidae). She is placed in a family of her own. Their closest relatives within the Scombriformes are probably the snake mackerels and the hair tails (Trichiuridae).
