Scotia is a village in Schenectady County in New York in the United States . At the United States Census 2010 the place had 7729 inhabitants.

The Village of Scotia is part of the Town of Glenville and partially borders Schenectady .

history

The land on which Scotia is located was acquired from the Mohawk by Alexander Lindsay Glen from Scotland in the 17th century . Glen gave the place the name of his homeland in the Latin version scotia . In 1904 Scotia was incorporated .

There are a number of historic buildings in the village, including the Glen Sanders Mansion, which dates back in part to 1713, the Abraham Glen House from the 1730s and the Flint House from the early 19th century.

Scotia is located on the northern bank of the Mohawk River , which forms part of the Erie Canal here. Four islands in the river belong to the Scotia area; these are the Isle of the Mohawks, the Isle of the Senecas and the Isle of the Onondagas, as well as most of Dalys Island. The United States Naval Reserve maintains a large military depot in the northeast of the local area .

The geographic coordinates are 42 ° 50 ′  N , 73 ° 58 ′  W (42.831326, −73.965409). The Interstate 890 on the opposite bank of the river leads much of the traffic south and west of Scotia over, but ends in the north at the New York State Route 5 , which passes as Mohawk Turnpike or Mohawk Avenue in west-east direction through Scotia . New York State Route 50 (Ballston Road) and New York State Route 147 (Sacandaga Road) branch off from it northwards . A railway line from Conrail runs east and north around Scotia, there is a train station in neighboring Schenectady.

The residents of Scotia were distributed to 3233 households out of which 34.2% had children under 18 years of age. 46.8% of households were married, 12.3% had a female head of household without a husband, and 37.7% were not families. 32.8% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.7% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.04.

The population was divided into 26.2% minors, 5.8% 18–24 year olds, 29.8% 25–44 year olds, 21.5% 45–64 year olds and 16.7% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 85.1 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 77.6 men.

The median household income in Scotia was 42,028 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 51,449 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 38,074 compared to $ 27,946 for women. The per capita income was $ 20,386. 6.6% of the population and 5.9% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 9.7% of minors and 6.0% of those aged 65 and over.
