Scottsboro's geographic coordinates are 34 ° 39 ′ N , 86 ° 3 ′ W (34.651368, −86.042570).
According to the United States Census Bureau , Scottsboro has an area of 134.0 km² , of which 122.6 km² is land and 11.3 km² (= 8.47%) is water. This body of water is largely formed by the Tennessee River and its oxbow branches .
The section of the Tennessee River Valley in which Scottsboro is located is geologically related to the Sequatchie Valley .

Four Scottsboro structures and sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 26, 2020, including the College Hill Historic District , the Public Square Historic District, and the Scottsboro Memphis and Charleston Railroad Depot .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Scottsboro had 14,762 people. The population density was 120.4 people per km ². There were 6848 housing units at an average of 55.8 per km ². The Scottsboros population was 91.11% White , 5.34% Black or African American , 1.02% Native American , 0.54% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 0.56% said other races belong to and 1.42% named two or more races. 1.50% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Scottsboros distributed to 6224 households out of which 28.7% were living in children under 18 years. 52.5% of households were married, 12.0% had a female head of household without a husband, and 32.5% were not families. 29.6% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.85 people.
The population was divided into 22.8% minors, 7.7% 18–24 year olds, 27.8% 25–44 year olds, 25.9% 45–64 year olds and 15.7% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 women there were 88.6 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 84.5 men.

Not far north of the city is the Bellefonte nuclear power plant , construction of which was discontinued in 1988. The two reactors should be completed from 2011, so that the first reactor will generate electricity from 2017 and the second reactor from 2020/21.
